Great Stories of young men reintegrating and adding value back into society
I am twenty-three years of age. Since the age of fifteen, I have been in and out of the prison system, my last three years and 4 months for an armed robbery. Whilst in prison, due to good behaviour, I was allowed to work for a company called Hanssen during my prison leave. It was good for me because I had never worked before, and I felt un-judged whilst doing so. I enjoyed working with them, and when released on the 4th of April 2017, I continued working with them. I am thankful for the opportunity as it keeps me busy and allows me to earn legitimate money. This the longest I have been out of prison, and I have just finished parole. I now rent my own house with my girlfriend and newborn daughter, and it just makes me want to work harder for them. My life has honestly been so much better since working for Hanssen. I can now do the things I have always wanted a legitimate way.
I've been working with Chris Bown at Hanssen Construction for about four months now. Before I was working here, I was constantly going through the revolving door of a prison. Chris helped me gain my confidence back in myself. He will always ask how I am and takes me out for coffee to get in touch on how I am, which has been such a positive impact on me. I believe what Chris and Hanssen Construction are doing for people like myself is such a good and positive thing to stop that revolving door, by allowing people to work and gain self-worth to again feel like a part of society.
My name is Shane Brown. I have recently finished a 3-year jail sentence. Whilst being imprisoned at Wandoo Reintegration Facility, Chris Bown came to a career expo back in 2016 and gave me hope of a job prospect working for Hanssen Construction. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I always had it at the back of my mind, for I knew having a criminal record would make it difficult for me to get a job. About a month before I got released, I got hold of a man named Bobby, who is friends with Chris Bown and inquired about the job interview. I started 3 days after being released "in the scaffolding team" which I personally think was the best thing for me as working keeps me on the straight and narrow. I have nothing but respect and high praise for Chris and the company Hanssen as they are helping me through a very tough time in my life.
Nathan 25 years old and I'm writing this letter to tell you about how being let out of prison on the day of release has helped me stay out of prison and secure job at Hanssen Construction. I've been in and out of prison most of my life due to not having a job and hanging around the wrong crowd of people, but since I've started with Hanssen, I've been out of trouble and started hanging around good people and have a bright future. I think more people should get this experience and opportunity, as it has helped me so much.
